Aside from being delicious and enjoyable, food supplies nutrients!  These nutrients function as fuel, much like gasoline to a car. We need food to sustain life as we know it, but unlike the primitive years of our ancestors, we have a lot more access to food. We are also able to create different flavors and textures with our meals. Unlike a gas tank, which would spill over and not utilize excess gas, our bodies will store excess energy as body fat.

These fat stores allow us as a species to survive prolonged periods of low caloric intake (famine). Fortunately, for most of the United States we don’t experience famine to extreme degrees anymore. However, that does mean we can’t experience overconsumption of food that yields negative side effects to our health. Some of the top health risks facing the United States today are diabetes and cardiovascular disease.

Since we have to manage weight on our own accord, we need to understand the logistics of figuring out what our energy needs are via our basal metabolic rate and total daily energy expenditure.

To put it simply, this is the amount of energy (calories) your body expends at rest….
